Politicians are a funny lot. It is incredible the amount of access you can get to them for pictures when they are on the campaign trail but more incredible how this access dissipates between elections.
I have covered many election counts over the years and photographed the triumph and disappointment on the faces of the candidates as the results are read out.
I have photographed nearly all the recent leaders from Edward Heath, Margaret Thatcher, David Steel, Paddy Ashdown to Tony Blair, David Cameron, Alex Salmond and Jeremy Corbyn. Oh, and not forgetting John Major.
Not forgetting also those that have spent time at Her Majesty’s pleasure such as Jeffrey Archer, Jonathan Aitken and Paul White who became Lord Hanningfield.
In Libya I photographed the emerging leaders of the National Transitional Council after the fall of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. I even photographed the lifeless body of the Colonel laid out on a dirty mattress with the bodies of his son Muttasim along with another former government official, in a cold storage unit on an industrial estate in Misurata.
